National Market Listing

We find that visiting markets while traveling is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the unique character of that area. In some cases, they will be listed in travel guides. In other areas, they are mostly known by the locals. In any case, they’re often one of the gems in the community, and not to be missed!

A relatively comprehensive listing of farmers markets is maintained by the US Dept of Agriculture. Just click on the state you’ll be visiting for market listing.

Below you’ll find a listing of some of the larger and most unique markets in the country. The character of these markets vary.

  • Market Halls are typically large buildings with permanent vendors that are open all week. These markets are typically open year round. Sometimes they will add an outdoor market on the weekend. Several famous examples include Pike Place Market (Seattle) and Reading Terminal Market (Philadelphia).
  • Street Markets are one (or more) day a week events that are set up out doors. They run seasonally. The largest ones are amazing. Dane County market in Madison Wisconsin has over 200 farmers (only) and as many as 25,000 visitors in a week! Santa Monica market occurs on a Wednesday – and draws over 7000 customers spread over 4 downtown blocks.
